Ole Miss softball head coach Jamie Trachsel added Bobby Buchanan as an assistant coach to the program in July 2024 with Buchanan set for his second season in Oxford heading in the 2026 season.
In Buchanan’s first season in Oxford, he helped oversee a historic campaign in which the Rebels reached the program’s first ever Women’s College World Series. Buchanan was a key piece of the coaching staff that was selected as the ATEC/NFCA South Region Staff of the Year following the season.
Buchanan’s work with the offense spearheaded a record-breaking unit, who set school records in single season hits, home runs, doubles, RBI, total bases and runs scored. Six Rebels took home NFCA All-South Region honors and three Rebels took home All-SEC honors, both setting program records. Jaden Pone led the SEC in batting average during conference play, while Lexie Brady set the program’s single season home run record. Transfer Aliyah Binford and freshman Persy Llamas also shined under Buchanan with 55 RBI apiece to share the single season program record in their first seasons in Oxford.
Additionally, Buchanan oversaw the recruitment and signing of a record-setting recruiting class on signing day in November of 2025, with the class being named the No. 7 class in the nation, according to Softball America/On3 and the No. 11 class according to D1Softball.
Prior to arriving in Oxford, Buchanan spent the 2024 season on staff at Texas A&M as the director of player development, where he was a member of a team that reached the Austin Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament and won 44 games. He was in charge of creating player development plans and KPI's, scouting opponents, creating scouting reports, and analyzing team data.
Prior to his first year in the SEC, Buchanan was the hitting coach at Texas Lutheran in 2023, where he helped them reach the NCAA Division III regional. He played a key role in developing one All-American, five NFCA All-Regional members, and nine All-American Southwest Conference honorees.
Outside of his time as a collegiate coach, Buchanan founded High & Inside in 2020, where he serves as a consultant and private softball instructor for player development and scouting, and partners with SoftballCloud, Yakkertech, and S2 Cognition. Through High & Inside, he has worked with four Women's College World Series teams and numerous Super Regional programs.
Buchanan was the hitting coach and player development coach for the Texas Bombers from 2021-23, where he led numerous Division I athletes, and helped lead the team to the Alliance National Championship.
In 2019, Buchanan was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UT Arlington. With the Mavericks, he helped the team defeat multiple top-25 schools including Arkansas, Baylor, and Oklahoma State. He played an instrumental role in development of the 2019 NCAA hits leader and saw two of three outfielders earn all-conference honors.
Prior to his time in Arlington, Buchanan spent 2018 as the head coach at Louisiana College where he helped lead the team to their best finish in the conference standings over the last eight seasons.
Buchanan was previously at Southern University in 2017 as the associate head coach, was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Dakota in 2016, and was a volunteer assistant coach for three seasons at Texas State from 2012-14 and at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2015.
He earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Texas State in 2014.
