Langston Rogers retired in May 2010 after 29 years of service to Ole Miss, having joined the Rebel athletics staff July 1, 1981, as sports information director. He was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports information in 1984, was named associate athletics director for sports information in 2001 and then became senior associate athletics director for media relations in 2005.
Although retired, he continues to serve the University of Mississippi on a part-time basis as Special Assistant to the Athletics Director for History.
Prior to joining Ole Miss, Rogers served 17 years as Sports Information Director at his alma mater, Delta State University, and four years as the school's Publicity Director, overseeing both general and sports news.
In 1980, at age 36, Rogers became the youngest president in history of the 2,700 member College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and served 11 years on its Board of Directors. He continues to serve on a number of CoSIDA's key committees.
In 1991, he was honored for 25 years of service in CoSIDA, and in 2001 received the Arch Ward Award, presented annually to a CoSIDA member who has made outstanding contributions to the field of college sports information and is the highest award presented to a member of that national organization.
In July of 2008, Rogers received the Trailblazer Award from CoSIDA, presented annually to an individual who is a pioneer in the field of sports information and who has mentored and helped improve the level of ethnic and gender diversity within CoSIDA. In 2010, he was also honored by CoSIDA with its Lifetime Achievement Award and with the naming of the Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship, a $10,000 annual scholarship presented to a minority or female athletics public relations professional. In October of 2018, Rogers was honored by the University of Mississippi Athletics Department with the Nathaniel Northington Trailblazer in Athletics Award, which is presented to recognize contributions to the community in the area of diversity and inclusion.
Rogers is a member of eight Halls of Fame, including induction into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame in 1990, the Mississippi Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame in 1997, the Delta State University Alumni Hall of Fame in 2008, the East Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, the Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, the Delta State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He also received the Distinguished Statesman Award from Delta State in 1998 and the Elmore (Scoop) Hudgins Sports Information Directors Award from the All American Football Foundation in 1999. In October of 2011, he was honored by East Mississippi Community College as its Alumnus of the Year.
Rogers is currently serving as a member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame District 3 Screening Committee, CoSIDA Past Presidents Advisory Council and the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame Selection Veterans Committee. He is also a member of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association, a lifetime member of the Delta State University Alumni Association and an honorary member of the University of Mississippi M-Club Alumni Chapter. Rogers also serves as a member of its board of directors. Throughout his career, Rogers has also served on numerous other committees, including a six-year term on the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors, and 20 years as a member of the Media Coordination Committee for the NCAA Women's Final Four Basketball Championship.
In 2023, Rogers received the prestigious Honorary Alumni Award from the University of Mississippi Alumni Association. The award, which is not presented every year, recognizes individuals who, though not graduates of the university, have consistently demonstrated extraordinary commitment, support, dedication, loyalty, leadership or service that has enriched the substance of and contributed to the advancement of the university’s or Alumni Association’s mission, reputation or prestige.
He is also a past president of the Southeastern Conference sports information directors (1989 90, 1990 91) and was one of the United States Olympic Committee's press liaison officers at the 1982 National Sports Festival.
Rogers earned both the B.S.E. and M.Ed. degrees from Delta State University, where he was a member of the baseball team, playing for Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Dave "Boo" Ferriss, while also serving two years as student sports information director and sports editor of the campus newspaper. Prior to enrolling at Delta State, he earned the Associate of Arts degree from East Mississippi Junior College where he was student body president, editor of the campus newspaper, played baseball for legendary coach Bob "Bull" "Cyclone" Sullivan and also served as student sports information director. Ferriss and Sullivan are both members of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
He is married to the former Paula Lowery of Cleveland, Miss., who also graduated from Delta State. They have two children, Laura and Bill, and four grandchildren -- Austin, Anna, Abby and Avery. Laura received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Delta State and her PhD from the University of Mississippi, while Bill's undergraduate degree is from Ole Miss and his master's degree is from Mississippi College.
