LEXINGTON, Kty. - The 19th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats rallied for two goals in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Ole Miss Rebels 2-1 Friday night.
With the loss, Ole Miss falls to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Wildcats improve to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the SEC.
"We played extremely well tonight. We were well organized and fought hard the entire game," Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman said. "We played great defense and put a lot of pressure on the ball, but you have to give Kentucky credit. The are a very good team and deserved to be ranked in the top 20."
Despite being out shot 15-7, the Rebels kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard for most of the game. Ole Miss senior goalkeeper Birna Bjornsdottir recorded four saves in the game despite suffering a mild concussion after being kicked in the head midway through the first half.
"This was Birna's best performance since she came to Ole Miss," Holeman said. "She was our player of the game and just had a tremendous performance tonight."
Freshman forward Bridget Brooks put Ole Miss on the board in the 29th minute off a cross from Sarah Wong and Regan Scanlon. The goal was Brooks' 14th on the season and her 12th in the last 10 games.
Ole Miss held the 1-0 advantage until Kentucky's Jen Reese tied the game in the 56th minute. Jaime Dellbringge put the Wildcats ahead in the 66th minute with a goal off a corner kick by Annie Gage.
The Rebels travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Rebels return home to host Tennessee on Oct. 22 and Georgia on Oct. 24.
