REBELS ON TV
Thursday's game, which will be televised by ESPN, will mark Ole Miss' sixth TV appearance of 1999, one shy of the school record of seven set in 1997 (Ole Miss will have a shot to tie that record if the Rebels' receive a bowl invitation). Ole Miss is 2-3 in TV games this season.

Overall, this will be the Rebels' 103rd TV appearance dating back to Ole Miss' first network TV appearance in the 1953 Sugar Bowl against Georgia Tech. It will be the Rebels' ninth apperance on ESPN. Ole Miss is 46-55-2 all-time in TV games, and is 4-4 on ESPN. During the decade of the 1990s, Ole Miss is 17-22 in television games.

Thursday's game will mark Ole Miss' fourth straight year as being part of ESPN's Thursday night college football package. The Rebels played Tennessee in Memphis in a ESPN Thursday night game in 1996, Arkansas in Oxford in 1997, and Mississippi State last year on Thanksgiving in Oxford. This year's game will be ESPN's second-ever Egg Bowl telecast, with last year's being the first.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State have played on TV seven times previously, including the last three years. The Rebels are 4-3 against the Bulldogs in TV games.

OLE MISS RECORDS ITS BEST 10-GAME MARK SINCE 1992
Ole Miss' 7-3 record equals their best 10-game start since going 7-3 in 1992. The Rebels went on to beat Mississippi State that season, 17-10, in the regular season finale, and then defeated Air Force 13-0 in the Liberty Bowl to finish the year 9-3.

A victory Thursday night would give Ole Miss its first eight-win regular-season since that 1992 season. Ole Miss went 8-4 in 1997, but picked up its eighth win in the Ford Motor City Bowl against Marshall.

REBELS SECURE THIRD STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON
Ole Miss' 38-16 win over Arkansas on Nov. 6 guaranteed the Rebels three straight winning seasons for the first time since finishing 6-5 three consecutive years from 1975-77. The win over the Razorbacks also marked the first time Ole Miss had posted three straight years with at least seven wins since doing so in four consecutive seasons from 1968-71. The Rebels went 8-4 in 1997 and 7-5 last year.

Rebels In The "Red" Zone When the offense moves the ball inside the opponent's 20-yard line, the offense is considered to be in the "red zone," and in prime scoring position. The following chart shows how the Rebel offense has performed inside the "red zone" this season:

SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE
Thursday's game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State will feature the SEC's top ranked rushing offense against the SEC's and the nation's top ranked rushing defense. The Rebels boast the best ground game in the conference, averaging 187.7 yards per game. Ole Miss is also ranked No. 22 in the country in rushing offense. Mississippi State is yielding just an average of 60.5 yards per game to lead the conference and the nation in rushing defense (see Rebels in the SEC/NCAA Statistics on page 4).

GUNN LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY
Sophomore RB Joe Gunn (Amory, Miss.) needs 59 yards rushing against Mississippi State Thursday night to record the fourth 1,000-yard rushing season in school history, and join Kayo Dottley (1947-50) and current junior Deuce McAllister (Morton, Miss.) as the only 1,000-yard rushers in school history. Dottley recorded 1,000-yard campaigns in 1949 and 1950, including a school-single season record of 1,312 yards in 1949. McAllister registered the Rebels' first 1,000-yard season since 1950 with 1,082 yards last year. If Gunn can reach the 1,000-yard barrier, it would be Ole Miss' first back-to-back seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher since Dottley's 1949 and 1950 seasons. Through 10 games this season, Gunn has 941 yards on 180 carries. The 941 yards ranks sixth on the school's single-season list (see the Rebel Record Book on page 4).

GUNN, McALLISTER BOTH TOP 100-YARDS AGAINST GEORGIA
RBs Joe Gunn and Deuce McAllister both topped the 100-yard rushing mark against Georgia this past Saturday. McAllister gained 104 yards on nine carries, including a career-long 84-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, while Gunn churned out 103 yards on 12 carries. It is the second time this season Gunn and McAllister have both rushed for at least 100 yards in the same game. They also did so against LSU (10/30) when McAllister rushed for 140 yards on 25 carries and Gunn 135 yards on 19 carries. The pair also rushed for over 100 yards each in a game last year versus Arkansas State.

MORE ON THE REBELS ONE-TWO PUNCH
The 941 yards rushing by Joe Gunn and the 675 by Deuce McAllister gives Ole Miss a pair of 600-yard rushers in the same season for the first time since 1978 and for the third time in school history. Harol Lofton and Wilson Dilllard rushed for 698 and 621 yards, respectively, in 1952, and Leon Perry and Freddie Lee Williams registered 673 and 627 rushing yards, respectively, in 1978.

The 1,616 yards combined by Gunn and McAllister also ranks as the second-highest tandem in school history behind the 1949 duo of Kayo Dottley and Billy Mustin, who combined for 1,867 yards.

McALLISTER AIMS FOR CAREER RUSHING TD MARK
With his two rushing TDs against Georgia, Deuce McAllister moved to within two rushing touchdowns of the Ole Miss career record of 25 held by Archie Manning (1968-70). McAllister currently has 23 career rushing TDs, scoring four during his freshman season in 1997, seven last season, and 12 in nine games this season (see the Rebel Record Book in the box on the right).

PETERSON STILL HAS A SHOT FOR THE RECORD
Senior WR Cory Peterson (German-town, Tenn.) enters his final career regular season game needing a near-career performance to tie the Ole Miss career records for receptions. Peterson was limited to just one catch for 17 yards against Georgia to give him 131 career catches. He is eight shy of the career record held by Ta'Boris Fisher (1993-96) with 139. Peterson's career single-game high for receptions is nine, set last year against Memphis (see the Rebel Record Book in the box on the right).

PETERSON'S STREAK REACHES 20
With his one reception against Georgia, Cory Peterson extended his streak to 20 straight games, including last December's Sanford Independence Bowl, with at least one reception. The 20-game streak is the longest by an Ole Miss player since Ta'Boris Fisher caught a pass in 21 consecutive games from 1993-95.

BINKLEY TIES RECORD
Junior PK Les Binkley (Memphis, Tenn.) made one FG and two extra points this past Saturday against Georgia to tie Brian Lee's 1992 single-season scoring record for a kicker with 70 points. A junior college All-America at Northwest (Miss.) last season before coming to Ole Miss, Binkley is 12-of-14 on FG's this season, including 4-of-5 from 40 yards and out, and is a perfect 34-of-34 on extra points attempts. Binkley has also been named as a semi-finalist for this year's Lou Groza Award, which is given to the nation's top place kicker (see the Rebel Record Book in the box on the right).

MILLER LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY
Junior QB Romaro Miller (Shannon, Miss.) needs 151 yards passing against Mississippi State Thursday night to become the first Ole Miss quarterback to record at least 2,000 yards passing in back-to-back seasons. Last season in 10 games, Miller passed for 2,273 yards. He enters this week's game with 1,849 yards on 134-of-243 passing with 12 TDs and five INTs.

SACK ATTACK
Ole Miss had one sack against Georgia to extend its streak to 21 straight regular season games with at least one QB sack. The last time the Rebels didn't register at least one QB sack was in the 1997 regular-season finale at Mississippi State. Senior DT Kendrick Clancy (Tusc-aloosa, Ala.) leads the team in sacks with 7.0 for 41 yards. The 36 sacks is the most by a Rebel team since recording 39 in 1992.

EXTRA POINTS

  • Ole Miss is 66-47 (.584 winning percentage) during the 1990s, marking the Rebels most successful decade since winning 77 games during the 1960s.
  • Ole Miss has an all-time record of 183- 146-12 (.554 winning percentage) in the month of November.
  • The Rebels are 14-17 (.452 winning percentage) in November during the decade of the 1990s.
  • The 27 wins by this year's class of Ole Miss seniors heading into Thursday's regular season finale at Mississippi State, is the most by a Rebel senior class since the 1993 seniors won 29 games from 1990-93. Ole Miss will have 17 seniors playing in their final regular season game Thursday.
  • RB Deuce McAllister's 104 yards rushing against Georgia moved him into third- place on the Ole Miss career rushing list with 2,159 yards. He surpassed Leon Perry who gained 2,135 yards from 1976- 79 (see the Rebel Record Book on page 4).
  • The 100-yard rushing performances by Gunn and McAllister against Georgia was both their eighth career 100-yard rushing performance. They're tied for fourth on the school's career list, two shy of the Ole Miss career record of 10 set by Dou Innoncent (1191-92, 94-95). John Avery (1996-97) and Kayo Dottley (1947-50) are tied for the second on that list with nine (see the Rebel Record Book on page 4).
  • Deuce McAllister's 581 kickoff return yards on 22 attempts this season establishes a new Ole Miss single-season record, bettering the old mark of 560 yards on 28 attempts by Pat Coleman in 1988 (see the Rebel Record Book on page 4).
  • QB Romaro Miller had his string of eighth straight games with at least one TD pass snapped against Georgia. The eight- game streak ties Archie Manning's (1968- 70) school record. Manning tossed at least one TD pass in eight consecutive games over the course of the 1969 and 1970 seasons, including one in the 1970 Sugar Bowl.
  • Romaro Miller was named as one of 25 leading candidates for the 1999 Davey O'Brien Award, which is given to the nation's top collegiate quarterback.
  • This past Saturday's attendance of 50,876 against Georgia was the third largest crowd at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and was also the third largest on-campus crowd to watch a game in the state of Mississippi.
