Softball Signs Three Recruits for 2001 Season

Oxford, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball program spanned across the country to sign its recruits for the 2001 season, signing players from California, Illinois and Florida.
Lindsey Bonnell, a pitcher and utility player from Bunker Hill, Ill., signed a letter of intent to play with the Rebels after posting a 19-4 record with a 0.40 earned run average as a junior in 1999 with Bunker Hill High School.
"Lindsey is an exceptional athlete with the ability to pitch and play any position on the field," Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts said.
Desiree Layman, a middle infielder from West Palm Beach, Fla., hit .379 with nine doubles, five triples and 21 runs batted in for John I. Leonard High School as a junior in 1999.
"Desiree is a raw athlete that is only just beginning to tap into her potential. She has all the strengths to be a power hitter and a pure infielder," Letts said.
Jennifer Poore, a catcher from San Diego, Calif., joins the Rebels after posting impressive numbers during her prep and club team career. As a member of the Southern California Athletics Gold club team, Poore finished fifth with a .312 batting average, fourth with a .416 slugging percentage and fourth with 14 RBI.
In addition, Poore's team won the Amateur Softball Association 18-under national championship in 1999.
"Jennifer is a natural athlete that will give us experience behind the plate," Letts said. "She is the kind of athlete ever coach wants because she is always pushing herself to become better."
The Ole Miss softball team opens the 2000 season at the University of Texas-Arlington Pepsi Classic on Feb. 11-13.
