OXFORD, Miss. -- A pair of Ole Miss linemen, center Ben Claxton and defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy, continue to pile up honors for their performance during the 1999 season after both were recognized by Football News.
Claxton, a 6-3 1/2, 290 pound freshman from Dublin, Ga., was selected to the Football News 1999 All-Freshman team, while the national publication named Clancy, a 6-1 1/2, 270 pound senior from Tuscaloosa, Ala., as the Most Valuable Player of the Rebels.
"We congratulate Ben and Kendrick for their latest honors," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "They are most deserving of this national recognition."
Being named to the 1999 All-Freshman team marked the second such honor for Claxton, who was earlier selected to the Freshman All-America team by The Sporting News. He also was named to the All-Southeastern Conference freshman team by both the Knoxville News-Sentinel and the SEC Coaches.
Clancy earlier picked up third team All-America honors from The Associated Press, Football News, and The Sporting News. He also was named first team All-SEC by Football News and second team All-SEC by The Associated Press. Clancy has been chosen to participate in the 2000 Senior Bowl.
Ole Miss, 7-4, will close out the 1999 season December 31 in the Sanford Independence Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners.
