NEW ORLEANS - LSU Brad Hawpe hit two home runs one solo and one two-run to lift the nationally-ranked Tigers to a 5-1 win over Ole Miss in final-day action at the Winn-Dixie Showdown, held in the Superdome on Sunday.
The loss dropped the Rebels' record to 3-4. The Tigers improved to 4-2. LSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Hawpe blasted his first homer, a solo shot. The Tigers proceeded to add another run to increase their lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, LSU increased its advantage to 3-0 when Jeff Leaumont hit a solo home run.
The Rebels were able to cut the Tiger lead to 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning when Carl Lafferty doubled and later scored on an Alex Williamson pinch-hit single. LSU, however, responded with a Hawpe two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-1 advantage. Ole Miss had a rally with runners on second and third in the top of the ninth, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
LSU's Bryan Grace (1-0) picked up the win, going eight innings and allowing only one run on seven hits while striking out nine and walking two. Hunter Gomez worked the ninth inning for LSU and recorded two strikeouts. Jeff McAvoy (2-1) suffered the loss for the Rebels. McAvoy worked seven innings and allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out four. Dan McShea relieved McAvoy in the eighth.
In late action on Saturday night, junior Michael Rosamond collected four hits, including a school single-game record three triples, to lead the Rebels to a 12-2 win over New Orleans.
Holding a 2-1 lead, Ole Miss exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-1 advantage and put the game away. The Rebels scored the seven runs on seven hits in the inning. Jude Voltz led off the inning with a single, and immediately scored when junior college transfer Craig Nugen blasted a two-run homer to increase the Ole Miss lead to 4-1. The Ole Miss fourth continued when J.T. Harrison reached on an error and moved all the way to third base on the play. Chad Hill's single plated Harrison for a 5-1 Rebel lead. Brad Henderson (triple), Chad Mead (double) and Rosamond (triple) then followed with consecutive extra-base hits to give Ole Miss an 8-1 advantage. John Massey then finished the scoring when his single brought Rosamond home for the 9-1 lead.
The Rebels will return to Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field to begin a five-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Ole Miss will host Southeast Missouri State on Feb. 23 and 24 and South Alabama on Feb. 26-28. The Rebels' contest versus Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. (CT) start.
