Baseball Falls to So. Mississippi, 12-3

JACKSON, Miss.- Sparked by Darren Welch's three-run homer in the first inning, Southern Mississippi put up eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 12-3 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels Tuesday night.

With the loss, Ole Miss dropped to 16-16 on the season while the Golden Eagles improved to 21-8.

Southern Mississippi scored four runs in the first inning and added two runs in the second and third innings for an 8-0 lead before the Rebels managed their first run of the game.

Chad Hill and Michael Rosamond had consecutive run scoring singles in the fourth to put the Rebels on the board. Michael Williamson also drove in a run with a single in the 8th inning for Ole Miss to bring the Rebels within five at 8-3.

But, the Golden Eagles sealed the win with four runs in the eighth inning capped by Michael Artman's two-run single.

Ole Miss used five pitchers for the game with starter Clint Farrar (0-1) picking up the loss. Farrar gave up five runs on three hits with two walks in one inning of work. Ole Miss pitching gave up 11 walks for the game while Southern Mississippi did not allow a walk.

Brad Henderson and Rosamond each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Rebels who finished with 10 hits for the game.

The Golden Eagles were led by Welch who was 4-for-5 with three RBI and

Artman who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Scott White notched the win, allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout in five innings of work.

Ole Miss opens a nine game home stand on Wednesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. against the Memphis Tigers.
