OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss redshirt freshman Markee Pearson recorded a team-high eight tackles, and sophomore Anthony Magee had six tackles and an interception as the defense highlighted the Rebels' second intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday. Magee returned the interception 75 yards.
On the offensive side, freshman Allen Copeland led the rushing attack with 82 yards on three carries, including a 79-yard touchdown run. Freshman Charles Stackhouse was the offense's second-leading rusher with 29 yards on 11 carries.
Sophomore quarterback Romaro Miller completed eight of his 14 attempts for 51 yards and two interceptions. Freshman David Morris had his second straight 100-yard outing, as he connected on seven of his 12 attempts for 100 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Tim Gallahan was 10-of-16 passing for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Ole Miss defense set the tone early in the scrimmage when, on the second series, junior cornerback Timothy Strickland picked off a Miller pass to halt the drive. Following Strickland's interception, the Rebel defense continued its solid play on the next five series, holding the Ole Miss offense to 48 total yards. On the next series, the Rebel defense came up big again, as Pearson recorded the second interception of the scrimmage.
"The defense should be ahead, and they were not during last week's scrimmage," said Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville. "I was glad to see them show a little pride today and make a better effort. They made a lot of progress."
The offense got on the board in the ninth series when freshman Donald Juneau connected on a 50-yard field goal. The Rebel offense scored the scrimmage's first touchdown, as Gallahan hit redshirt freshman Jamie Amrstrong for a 19-yard strike. The offense then scored touchdowns on its next two possessions which included Copeland's 79-yard scamper and a 46-yard scoring pass from Morris to freshman Ryan Huskey.
"We didn't show a lot of emotion on offense today, but we can overcome that," said Tuberville. "I was disappointed that after a day off, they didn't come back with a little fire. We just need to get everybody focused.
"After an 82-play scrimmage, we just didn't get a lot done other than on defense. We have a week and a half to go, and we'll get better."
The Rebels will return to the practice fields on Wednesday. Ole Miss will open its 1998 season on Sept. 5 versus Memphis at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The game, which will be broadcast by Jefferson-Pilot, is scheduled for an 1130 a.m. start.
