CLEVELAND, Miss. - Delta State scored six runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead and that would be all the offense the Statesmen needed as they defeated Ole Miss 13-4 Saturday afternoon.
After the first three batters of the inning reached base, catcher Neill Bartling delivered a one-out RBI single to score Jason Cochran to make it 1-0. Todd Bossier then followed with another RBI single and Brian Rea's two-run single made it 4-0. Dee Haynes would follow Rea with another two-run single to cap the six-run outburst.
Delta State added two more runs in the third to chase starter Jeff McAvoy after 2 1/3 innings. McAvoy finished the afternoon allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
Delta State starter Jeremy McClain pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out four to earn the win and improve to 4-0.
The Statesmen would add three more runs in the fourth to make it 11-0, and followed with a run each in the fifth and sixth as the Rebels would use five different pitchers on the day.
Ole Miss scored its four runs in the ninth as two Delta State errors led to four unearned runs.
Cochran led the Statesmen's 14-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
Freshman designated hitter Glen Morris was one of the few bright spots for the Rebels, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore shortstop Justin Huisman collected two hits, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The loss marked the third-straight for Ole Miss as the Rebels fell to 6-8 on the season. The win improved Delta State to 10-3.
Ole Miss will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday when the Rebels travel to Arkansas State for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Rebels will open SEC play next weekend with a three-game series at South Carolina starting Friday.
