Dreyfus, Snedeker Qualify for U.S. Amateur Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - Haymes Snedeker and Robert Dreyfus of the Ole Miss men's golf team qualified to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship to be held Aug. 24-30 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
Snedeker, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., finished second on the team with a 73.90 stroke average in 1998. He earned two top five, two top 10 and six top 20 finishes during the year, including a tie for fifth place at the New Mexico State Coca-Cola Classic and at the SEC Championships. Snedeker has also been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll the past three years.
"I am really looking forward to playing in the U.S. Amateur," Snedeker said. "I've been playing well all summer, and I hope to continue to play well in this tournament and make the school proud."
Dreyfus, a native of Meridian, Miss., is a junior transfer from Meridian Community College. He earned first-team All-America honors after placing fifth at the National Junior College Championships as a freshman. At MCC, he was named to several all-tournament teams and won numerous tournaments. In high school, he captured back-to-back state titles his junior and senior seasons.
"I am looking forward to going up there and competing against the top amateurs in the world and see how I rank against them," Dreyfus said. "I am excited about playing in the most prestigious amateur tournament in the world."
Woody Cowart, the head coach of the Ole Miss men's golf team, said, "I am proud of Haymes and Robert for qualifying for this tournament. This is a great opportunity for them to gain some experience against some of the best players in the world."
