OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's fastpitch team split a Southeastern Conference doubleheader with Arkansas Tuesday, falling to the Lady Razorbacks 2-1 in eight innings before coming back to post a come-from-behind 4-3 victory.
The victory in the second game broke a three-game losing skid for the Rebels and it was the first win ever over Arkansas. But the damage was done in the opening game, as the Lady Razorbacks closed the door on a SEC Tournament bid for Ole Miss.
"I was really proud of the way the team come out and competed today," Ole Miss coach Joyce Maudie said. "It was tough to play two close ball games like that but we won one against a good team. I was very happy with how they came back in the second game after coming up short in the first game."
With the win, Arkansas solidified a spot in the SEC Tournament with a 12-16 SEC record. Ole Miss has a remote chance of making the tournament, but they would have to close out the series with Arkansas with two more wins, and Kentucky would have to sweep a four-game series over Tennessee.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Fine threw a complete-game one-hitter in the first game, but the Rebels could only manage one run off Arkansas pitcher Tammy Kincaid as the Lady Razorbacks took a 2-1 victory in eight innings in the series opener.
In the second contest, Ole Miss scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Senior Christie Swain drove in Allison Willrath with a RBI single with two outs to give Ole Miss the win. Freshman Jamie Cummings tied the game earlier in the inning with a RBI single that drove in senior Augusta Schaefer.
Ole Miss is now 25-39 overall (8-20 SEC), while Arkansas moves to 25-39, 12-16 SEC
The Rebels and Lady Razorbacks will return to action Wednesday for the third and fourth games of the series. The SEC doubleheader is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Rebel Stadium.
