OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men's golf team will travel to Lexington, Ky., this weekend to compete in the Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships. The tournament, which runs from Friday through Sunday, is being hosted by the University of Kentucky at Champions Golf Club.
The Rebels enter the SEC Championships with some momentum, after placing in the top three in two of their last three tournaments. Ole Miss finished third in last weekend's Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate and won the Alabama Spring Invitational in late March.
Senior Haymes Snedeker will lead the Rebels into the SEC Championships. Last weekend, Snedeker won the individual title at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate with an eight-under par 208. The title was Snedeker's second of the 1998-99 campaign, as he also took top honors at the Gary Koch-Cleveland Golf Invitational last fall. Snedeker leads the squad with a 72.21 stroke average, and is ranked fifth in the SEC in that statistical category.
Juniors Jon Bartlett and Chris Malloy will also be competing for the Rebels this weekend. Bartlett is second on the squad with a 73.14 stroke average, while Malloy is fourth at 73.90. Both Bartlett and Malloy placed in the top five at the Alabama Spring Invitational in late March.
Rounding out the Ole Miss lineup at the SEC Championships will be sophomores Phil Caravia and Troy Muller. Caravia has a stroke average of 74.28 (fifth on team), while Muller is third with a 73.16 stroke average.
Last year, the Rebels placed seventh at the SEC Championships. Snedeker was the team's highest finisher at last season's championships, placing fifth. Ole Miss' best finish at the SEC Championships came in 1984, when the Rebels won the title.
