Lady Rebel Netters Down Mississippi State

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 9 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team downed 42nd-ranked Mississippi State 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Women's Sports Complex. The match had to be moved indoors due to rain.
The Lady Rebels (11-3, 4-1) won five of the six singles and then swept the doubles to improve to 36-4 all-time against the Lady Bulldogs. Ivona Mihailova got things going by downing Anca Vasiloaica 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. She has only lost one dual match all season.
Junior Celeste Frey lost the first set to State's Amelie Detriviere but came back strong in the second and third sets for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Senior Agnes Muzamel put Ole Miss up 3-0 as she held off Ivana Belancic 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 at the top spot.
Courtenay Chapman gave the Lady Rebels a 4-0 advantage dominating Elmear Sloan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. MSU's Andrea Lord defeated Alesya Ignatieva 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to make it 4-1, but Mariana Eberle clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Linda Mattsson at No. 5 singles.
"We always love to beat Mississippi State and we showed it today by playing with poise and purpose," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "We battled hard and made our emotions work for us. I am especially pleased with the way we looked in closing out our singles matches with the exeption of one."
In doubles, Muzamel and Chapman beat Sloan and Detriviere 8-4 at the No. 2 position, Frey and Eberle came back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Belancic and Leanne Wills 8-5 at the No.1 spot and the Mihailova twins defeated Lord and Mattsson 8-6 at the third spot.
The Lady Rebels will now get ready to hit the road for two important matches against seventh-ranked William & Mary on Friday and eighth-ranked Vanderbilt on Sunday.
