Lady Rebel Volleyball Team to Open Season at Tennessee-Martin

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's volleyball team will begin the 1998 season at Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
The Lady Rebels lost four starters from the 1997 team that went 12-19 overall and 7-8 in Southeastern Conference play, but six letterwinners return from last year's team to complement seven newcomers on the 1998 squad.
One of the most experienced players on the team is junior setter Lisa Frannino, a two- year starter and the team leader in assists and service aces in 1997. Frannino is already fourth in the Ole Miss record book for career assists.
"Our setting position is the area where we have a lot of experience," head volleyball coach John Blair said. "Lisa, with her ball control combined with her all-around defense, is one of the most well-rounded setters in the conference."
In the middle, junior Lauren Dorcheus and sophomore Anna Hackbarth return for the Lady Rebels. Dorcheus tied for the team lead in blocking assists and finished second on the team in total blocks last year, and Hackbarth came on to record playing time in the middle of the season. They are joined by freshman Leigh Rittiner.
On the outside, Danielle Atzinger, the lone senior on the 1998 squad, returns as one of the team's best defensive players and passers. She is joined by sophomore Kira Zschau, redshirt freshman Ragan Howard, junior transfer Kari Elggren and freshman Jaime Burns.
Tennessee-Martin posted a 13-19 overall record and a 4-14 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. First-year head coach Chris Rushing will look to senior outside hitter Jodie Hempen, the team's returning leader in kills and digs, to lead the Skyhawks in 1998.
