BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss junior right-hander Jeff McAvoy was named the Southeastern Conference's Pitcher of the Week for his performance Friday's 8-0 win over No. 19 Florida, the conference office announced Monday.

It is the second straight week that an Ole Miss player has earned either SEC Pitcher or Player of the Week honors. Junior first baseman Jude Voltz was named the SEC's Player of the Week last Monday after going 7-for-12 with five home runs in a three-game series at Vanderbilt.

McAvoy, 6-feet-2, 205 pounds from Palmer, Mass., allowed just two Florida baserunners to reach as far as second base, as he yielded just three hits and one walk while striking out eight in 8.1 innings against the Gators. The shutout snapped Florida's 268-game streak of not being shutout, the longest streak in the nation at the time. The streak also ranks as the sixth longest of all-time in NCAA history.

"He's certainly deserving of the honor," said third-year Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison. "He's pitched well throughout the season and he has gotten better since we've started conference play."

The shutout was the second of his career at Ole Miss since transferring from Western Carolina prior to last season. McAvoy's other career shutout came in his final start of last season when he halted LSU's 156-game streak of not being shutout. In that game, McAvoy fired a six- hitter in a 9-0 Ole Miss win over the Tigers, who were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time.

For the season, McAvoy has made 11 appearances, including nine starts, and is 6-3 with a 5.28 ERA, and has struck out 52 in 59.2 innings. In SEC play, McAvoy is 3-1 in five starts with a 4.19 ERA and 31 strike outs in 34.1 innings. He has won his last three starts against LSU, Vanderbilt and Florida.

The Rebels are currently 20-16 on the year and 10-5 in the SEC after recording their first- ever sweep of Florida this weekend. Ole Miss is in third-place in the SEC West, just two games behind first-place Arkansas.

The Rebels will host Southern Mississippi Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before hosting Georgia in a three-game SEC series starting Friday at 7:00 p.m.
