WACO, Texas - Baylor scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning as the 25th-ranked Bears out-slugged Ole Miss 15-10 Sunday afternoon at McLennan Community College.
Baylor won two of the three games in the weekend series and improved to 4-4, while Ole Miss dropped to 1-2 on the season.
Ole Miss, down 9-4 in the top of the eighth, rallied to score six runs and took a 10-9 lead capped by Robert Shelton's grand slam. The Bears, however, answered the rally with six runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth.
"We went out and scored runs, but Baylor came back," Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison said. "We've got a young pitching staff, and they have things to learn. I'm not disappointed in our team. We have a great offense, and the pitching will come along."
Shelton went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Ole Miss. Chad Hill, Chad Mead and Michael Rosamond were all 2-for-4. For Baylor, Eric Nelson went 3-for-5, and Matt Williams was 1-for- 3 with four RBI.
Ole Miss got on the board first as Jude Voltz reached on a fielder's choice to score Mead in the top of the fourth inning. Baylor answered in the bottom of the fourth on Preston Underdown's three-run homer and added four more runs in the fifth as Jon Topolski's two-run homer capped the inning.
The Rebels, down 7-1, came back with three runs in the sixth inning. Brad Henderson and Shelton singled, and Mead doubled to score Henderson. John Massey hit a sacrifice fly to score Shelton, and Rosamond followed up with a single to score Mead. Baylor, however, added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Ole Miss began to rally as a walk to Hill scored Rosamond, and Justin Huisman scored on a wild pitch. Shelton's grand slam gave the Rebels a 10-9 lead, but Baylor came back to score six in the bottom of the eighth for the 15-10 victory.
