Rebel Fastpitch Softball Splits Games at UTA Tournament

ARLINGTON, Texas The Ole Miss women's fastpitch softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the UTA/Pepsi Intercollegiate Tournament.
In the morning session, the Rebels were defeated by Texas A&M 3-2, but responded with a 9-8 victory over Southwest Texas State in 10 innings later in the day to improve to 2-2 on the season.
"I am very happy with the way we battled today," Head Coach Joyce Maudie said. "The team was never out of any game and they kept coming back. I am very excited about what this team can do."
The Rebels took an early 2-0 lead over Texas A&M in the final game of pool play, but a three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Aggies came from behind for the victory.
Sophomore Kaci Coffee and senior April Caraway both scored in the second inning for Ole Miss while sophomore Heather Swinney went 2-for-2.
The Rebels opened tournament play by advancing into the winner's bracket with the 9-8 victory over Southwest Texas State. Junior Stephanie Vaglica went 3-for-3 and had a career-high three RBI in the win and freshman Kara Chapman scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning with one out on a wild pitch.
Swinney also connected on a fifth-inning solo home run, the first of her career. Sophomore pitcher Bobbi Wurth came on in relief and was credited with the win.
The Rebels return to action with an 11:15 start against the winner of the Oklahoma State/Northeast Louisiana game.
