TALLAHASSEE, Fla., -- Sophomore pitcher Amanda Fine threw a four-hit shutout as the Ole Miss fastpitch softball team advanced to the semifinals of the Florida State University Invitational Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Southern Illinois in the semifinals Saturday.

Fine matched a season-high with nine strikeouts and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning for her first shutout of the season as the Rebels improved to 5-1 in the tournament.

Ole Miss, who improved to 14-19 on the season, will face the winner of the Central Michigan/Florida State game at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

The Rebels are now 5-1 after posting wins over Georgia State (2-1), Hofstra (2-0) and Southern Illinois Saturday. Ole Miss' only loss in the tournament came in a 3-1 defeat to Purdue in the afternoon.

"This is a big step for our program," Ole Miss head coach Joyce Maudie said. "We are really coming together as a team and we are getting great efforts from our pitching staffs. This team is starting to show what it is capable of doing when it plays together."

Ole Miss, with wins over Georgia State and Hofstra Saturday, finished first in Pool C and advanced to the quarterfinals against Souther Illinois.

In the first game of the day, Fine scattered four hits over seven innings, and only gave up one run, as she posted the complete-game victory while striking out a season-high nine batters. Fine also came up big at the plate, going 4-for-4 and driving in junior Stephanie Vaglica in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Rebels a 2-1 victory over Georgia State.

Against Hoftsra, sophomore Brittany Maxey threw a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits over seven innings as the Rebels handed the Flying Dutchwomen a 2-0 defeat, and avenging a 5-0 loss last week at the USF/Speedline Tournament. Maxey had four strikeouts and sophomore Mandy Shklar delivered a two-out single that drove in Kaci Coffee and Christie Swain in the top of the seventh inning.

In the final game of pool play against Purdue, sophomore pitcher Bobbi Wurth threw a complete game, giving up only seven hits, but it wasn't enough as the Boilermakers scored twice in the second inning and once in the fifth to post a 3-1 victory over Ole Miss. The only Rebel run came in the third inning as Fine drove in Vaglica with an RBI single.
