OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team will battle Mississippi State Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. Incase of inclement weather, the match will be played at the Women=s Sports Complex. The Rebels enter the match with a 16-3 overall record, 8-1 in the SEC. They are currently in first place in the conference and have won seven in a row and 11 of their last 12 matches. Ole Miss moved up 10 spots to No. 4 in the latest rankings propelled by seven wins over teams in the top 20.
"We face a big challenge with Mississippi State," head coach Billy Chadwick said. AWe would like to encourage all of our fans to come out and support our efforts to stay in first place in the SEC."
James Shortall, ranked No. 28 in singles, leads the Rebels. Freshmen Martin Selin and Kristofer Stahlberg continue to be a vital part of the Rebels success this season. The two are a combined 26-3 at the bottom two positions and 16-3 in the SEC. Mississippi State is ranked No. 22 in the latest rankings, its lowest ranking since 1990. The Bulldogs have battled injuries all season long and are 8-9 overall, 2-5 in the SEC. They are led by Marco Baron, who is ranked No. 29 in the country, but has been injured most of the season.
The Bulldogs have won the last three meetings, including a 4-3 victory in the River Hills Cup in February. The last time the two teams played in Oxford (1997), Ole Miss won 5-2. Mississippi State defeated the Rebels by that same score in Starkville last year.
