OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 5 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team downed Samford 7-0 Tuesday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, in their final tuneup before beginning conference play. The Rebels improve to 8-2 on the year, while Samford drops to 4-3.

"Samford has always had a good team," Head Coach Billy Chadwick said. "They pushed us at some positions, which is what we needed. We've got some work to do in preparation for SEC competition, but I know the guys will be ready on Friday."

Ole Miss won the opening doubles point sweeping all three matches. Sebastien DeChaunac and Martin Sjoqvist dominated Brad Vermeulen and Arturo Carrasco 8-3 at the top spot. Sebastien Lami and Vikrant Chada defeated Bernie Staub and Robert Sproul 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and James Shortall and Barry Hassell downed Tyler Johnson and Sukdheep Saluja 8-2 at No. 3 three doubles.

Anders Stenman gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Walker at No. 5 singles. At No. 4 singles Chada only allowed his opponent, Vermeulen, four games in a 6-2, 6-2 win. Shortall won his fourth match in a row as he defeated Saluja 6-4, 6-1 at the sixth spot and then Sjoqvist clinched the win, beating Carrasco 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The Rebels will now get ready to open defense of their Southeastern Conference Championship as they host the University of Arkansas Friday at 1:30 p.m., at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
