REBELS' TIGERS MEET IN GAME TWO OF WEEKEND SERIES
Ole Miss and No. 9 LSU will meet in game two of their three-game Southeastern Conference series today at 4:00 p.m. from Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The Rebels' 13-12, 5-2 SEC, have won seven of their last eight and are tied with Alabama for second-place in the SEC Western Division - one game behind first-place Auburn - after winning last night's series-opener 4-2. LSU comes into today's game 18-9 and 3-4 in the conference. Today's game' as well as tomorrow's 1:00 p.m. series-finale can be heard on stations along the Mississippi Network and on the internet at www.wqlj.com. David Kellum and Gary Darby will provide play-by-play and color commentary.

SERIES HISTORY WITH LSU
This will be the 225th meeting between Ole Miss and LSU. LSU leads the series 118-106, although the Rebels have won three of the last five meetings, including taking two-of-three from LSU last year in Oxford. The two teams have split their two meetings in 1999, with LSU winning 5-1 on Feb. 21 at the Winn-Dixie Showdown, and the Rebels winning 4-2 last night ... Third-year head coach Pat Harrison is 3-5 in his career versus LSU ... LSU's last series win was in 1997, sweeping a three-game series from the Rebels in Baton Rouge, La. ... Ole Miss, last sweep of LSU was back in 1982 in Oxford ... The Rebels' last series win in Baton Rouge was in 1980, taking two-of-three ... Ole Miss has never swept a three-game series from LSU at Alex Box Stadium.

COMMON OPPONENTS
LSU and Ole Miss have played two common opponents this season - Southern Mississippi and Tulane. LSU is 1-1 against USM and Tulane, defeating the Golden Eagles 8-2 at the Winn-Dixie Showdown on Feb. 19 and losing 5-3 to Tulane in Baton Rouge on Wednesday. The Rebels are 0-2 against common opponents, losing 8-6 to Tulane on Feb. 19 at the Winn-Dixie Showdown, and fell 6-4 to USM this past Tuesday in Jackson.

TIME CHANGES FOR UPCOMING GAMES

  • The Saturday, April 3 Ole Miss-Vanderbilt game has been switched from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Ole Miss' Saturday, April 10 home game with Florida has been pushed back from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to accommodate The Sunshine Network which will televise the game back to Florida.
  • The Saturday, April 24 game at Auburn has been changed from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. due to Auburn's spring football game.
  • Ole Miss, Saturday, May 8 game at Arkansas was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m., but will be played at 2:15 p.m.as FOX SportsSouth will televise the contest. FOX will air a 15-minute pre-game show starting at 2:00 p.m.

REBELS OFF TO BEST CONFERENCE START SINCE 1977
Ole Miss' 5-2 SEC record is its best conference start after seven games since 1977 when the Rebels also started SEC play at 5-2. The 1977 Ole Miss team ended up going 15-9 in SEC play and won the Rebels, last conference championship. A win today would give Ole Miss its best SEC start after eight games at 6-2, since starting out 7-1 in conference play back in 1972.

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ...
Last night's 4-2 win over LSU marked the first Ole Miss has won five straight SEC games since doing over the course of the 1989 and 1990 seasons, when the Rebels swept Tennessee to end the 1989 campaign and opened its 1990 SEC schedule with two wins over Auburn. The last time Ole Miss had won five straight SEC games in the same season was back in 1977 when the Rebels swept LSU in Oxford and the won the first two games of a three-game series with Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

THE LAST TIME....PART I
The last time Ole Miss has won six straight SEC games was back in 1972 when the Rebels ran-off nine straight conference wins with three-game sweeps of LSU, Alabama and Mississippi State. That Ole Miss teams went on to finish with a 15-3 conference mark and won the SEC championships with a two-game sweep of Vanderbilt in the conference championship series.

THE LAST TIME...PART II
The last time Ole Miss won two straight from LSU at Alex Box Stadium was in 1980 when Ole Miss won the first two games of a three-game series.

IF THE REBELS WIN TODAY ...
An Ole Miss win today would give the Rebels back-to-back series wins over LSU for the first time since 1982 when Ole Miss swept three games from the Tigers in Oxford and later that year beat LSU two out of three in Baton Rouge.

REBELS COMING OFF FIRST SEC SWEEP IN 10 YEARS Last Sunday's 3-2 win over Kentucky gave Ole Miss its first three-game sweep of an SEC opponent since sweeping Tennessee in Oxford on the final weekend of the 1989 season. It also marked the second three-game sweep of an SEC opponent in Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field since the facility opened in 1989. The last time the Rebels swept a three-game SEC series on the road was in 1986 at Kentucky.

HENDERSON HITTING .538 IN SEC PLAY
Senior 2B Brad Henderson went 3-for-5 last night to raise his average to .538 inside SEC play. Henderson entered the weekend tied with Tennessee's Jeff Christensen for the league's top batting average inside conference play at .524. Henderson went 7-for-13 against South Carolina, March 12-14 and was 4-for-8 versus Kentucky last weekend. Henderson also entered the weekend with a .630 on-base average during SEC games' which also led the SEC. For the year' Henderson is hitting a team-high .390 with one HR and 10 RBIs while hitting mostly in the lead-off or No. 2-spot in the order.

HUISMAN FILLING CLOSER ROLE NICELY
Sophomore RHP Justin Huisman has emerged as one of the top closers in the Southeastern Conference this season. Despite blowing his first save of the year Tuesday versus Southern Mississippi, Huisman has recorded six saves this season, second in the SEC to Alabama's Lance Cormier with eight heading into the weekend. Huisman needs three more saves to tie Rory Ferrell's 1977 Ole Miss single-season record of nine, and is four saves shy of tying Skipper Wright's (1983-86) career record of 13.

INJURY REPORT
Junior OF Craig Nugen will be out the rest of the season with an injury to his left shoulder. The extent of the injury is unknown at this time and may require surgery. Ole Miss will seek a medical redshirt for Nugen. The junior college transfer had appeared in 10 games, drawing four starts' and was batting .381 (8-for-21) with a HR and 10 RBIs.

STREAKS AND SUCH

  • Clint Farrar's ninth-inning RBI double extended his hitting streak to a career-long seven games.
  • Henderson is hitting .462 over the last 10 games, going 18-for-39. He went 3-for-5 last night to record his team-high 14th multiple-hit game of 1999, including his eighth, three-hit game.
  • With three hits last night, Henderson moved into sole possession of fourth-place on the Ole Miss career hit list with 236, surpassing Kary Bridges, (1991-93) career total of 233. Henderson is 11 hits shy of current Arizona Diamondback and former All-America David Dellucci (1992-95) in third-place with 247
  • Henderson's next RBI will tie him with Kevin Kessinger (1989-92) for eighth-place on the school's career list with 123. His five at-bats last night moved him past Kyle Gordon (1984-87) for fifth-place on the Rebel career list with 243.
  • Robert Shelton's third-inning single last night was his first hit in SEC play in 17 at-bats. Shelton came into Friday's game 0-for-16 in SEC play.
  • Last night's 4-2 win, was Ole Miss' 31st straight when leading after eight innings dating back to last season. Ole Miss was 20-0 when leading after eight last season' and is 11-0 this season.
  • Last night's win by junior RHP Jeff McAvoy moved his record to 2-1 versus LSU in three career starts. He has a 2.02 ERA against the Tigers, having allowed five runs on 13 hits in 22.1 IP.
  • Freshman RHP Cooper Campbell pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief last night to record his first career save. He also tied a career-high with three strike outs.
  • Huisman is the only Ole Miss player to start all 25 games at the same position. Henderson started the first 24 games at second base until starting at first base last night. Junior CF Chad Hill had started the season's first 23 games before not starting Tuesday versus Southern Mississippi. Senior OF Chad Mead has started all 25 games this season' making 18 starts in left field' six on the mound and one as the DH.
  • USM's Dusty Haley's home run of Glen Morris Tuesday night in Jackson marked the first earned run the Ole Miss bullpen had allowed in 23.1 innings dating back to the eighth inning of the Rebels, March 14 game at South Carolina.
  • Tuesday's loss was the Rebels first when holding the lead after seven innings of play. Ole Miss is 9-1 this season when leading after seven innings.
  • Sophomore RHP Jon Dickens saw his first career action in a SEC game last Sunday vs. Kentucky, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and fanning a career-high four.
  • Junior OF Michael Rosamond came into the weekend tied for the SEC lead in triples at four with Alabama's Darren Wood, and ranked 10th in slugging percentage.
  • Campbell entered the weekend ranked sixth in the SEC in appearances with 13. He made his 14th outing of the season last night.

ELEVEN TEAMS FROM THE 1998 NCAA TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHT REBELS' 1999 SLATE
Ole Miss has played six teams this season that qualified for post-season play in 1998. In all' the Rebels will play 11 schools this season that qualified for the 1998 NCAA Tournament' including College World Series participants Florida' LSU and Mississippi State. The Rebels are 6-8 this season against 1998 NCAA Tournament teams' having played Baylor (Feb. 12-14)' Tulane (Feb. 19)' LSU (Feb. 21)' SE Missouri State (Feb. 23-24) and South Alabama (Feb. 26-28). REVIEWING THE WEEK Tuesday- Southern Miss 6' Ole Miss 4
Southern Miss rallied plated four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Ole Miss 6-4 in front of 2'022 fans Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. The loss snapped the Rebels' six-game winning streak. Dan McShea' 3-1' took the loss' giving up two runs in the eighth. Freshman Clint Farrar and sophomore Carl Lafferty homered in the game. Farrar's was a solo shot to straight away center to tie the game at one in the first. Lafferty's was a solo shot in the fourth to put Ole Miss 3-2.

Friday- Ole Miss 4' LSU
Justin Huisman's RBI single to score Chad Mead from second in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and Jeff McAvoy pitched 6 1/3 strong innings as the Rebels defeated No. 9 LSU 4-2 Friday night. The win marked Ole Miss' seventh in its last eight games. McAvoy' 4-3' allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while fanning six to pick up the win. The win was McAvoy's second in three career starts against LSU' and it was his first since Feb. 26 against South Alabama. Freshman Cooper Campbell pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first career save. Brad Henderson went 3-for-5 on the night with a RBI to pace the Rebels' 14-hit attack as Ole Miss out-hit LSU 14-5.
