Rebels to Host Memphis

6/21/1999 | Baseball

April 28, 1998

REBELS TO FINISH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE BY HOSTING MEMPHIS TONIGHT: Ole Miss wraps-up its 1998 non-conference schedule by hosting the University of Memphis tonight at 7 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. This is the third meeting of the year between the two schools. Memphis defeated the Rebels 4-1 back on Feb. 28 at the Service Academies Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn., and Ole Miss returned the favor with a 20-4 romp last Tuesday night in Memphis.

HEAD COACH PAT HARRISON: Pat Harrison is in his second year as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebel baseball team. In his two seasons at the helm of the program, Harrison has compiled a 46-53 record. In six-plus years as a head coach, the 51-year old Harrison has compiled a 180-170-1 record. Prior to coming to Ole Miss, Harrison spent two seasons as head coach at Pepperdine University in 1995 and 1996. During his two years with the Waves, Harrison was 69-38-1 and led Pepperdine to a 1995 West Coast Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Harrison also spent three years as head coach at The Master's College (1988-90), an NAIA school in Los Angeles tallying a 65-79 mark with the Mustangs. Harrison has also served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Southern California (1973-76), Oral Roberts (1977-1986), Washington State (1987) and Oklahoma (1991-94) during his career. While as an assistant at Oklahoma, he helped guide the Sooners to a 1994 College World Series championship.

SCOUTING THE MEMPHIS TIGERS: Memphis, 22-21, comes into tonight's game carrying a three-game winning streak after sweeping Cincinnati in Conference USA play over the weekend. Senior outfielder Cary Hiles leads the Tigers at the plate with a .324-average (56-for-173), and junior outfielder Chris Becerra leads Memphis in both home runs with 15 and in RBIs with 46. Junior right-hander/outfielder Craig House is the staff's top pitcher with a 4-5 record and a 2.40 ERA in 71 1/3 innings of work. House earned the win in Memphis' 5-1 win over Cincinnati on Friday. House is also hitting .268 this season with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.

LAST MEETING: Ole Miss tied a season-high with six home runs, including grand slams from freshman Carl Lafferty and senior Nakia Magee, as the Rebels rolled to a 20-4 win at Memphis. Sophomore Joey Cramblitt pitched six innings to earn the win and improve to 8-2 on the year. He allowed the Tigers three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two. Lafferty and sophomore Michael Rosamond hit two home runs each, and Rosamond along with freshman third baseman Robert Shelton recorded three hits to pace the Rebels' 17-hit attack.

CRAMBLITT TAKES THE HILL IN SEARCH OF WIN NO. 9: Sophomore right-hander Joey Cramblitt takes to the mound tonight in search of his ninth win of the year for Ole Miss. Cramblitt became the first Ole Miss pitcher since 1995 to win as many as eight games in a year when he worked six innings last Tuesday against Memphis to earn the win and move to 8-2. Jamey Price and John McNeese were the last Rebel pitchers to win at least eight games in a year, when Price won 11 and McNeese 10, and Cramblitt's eight wins ranks as the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.)

HUISMAN SURPASSES DELLUCCI AGAIN: Senior shortstop Jason Huisman hit a solo home run in the seventh inning of the Rebels' 8-6 win over Alabama Saturday to break David Dellucci's 1995 single-season RBI record. Dellucci, now of the Arizona Diamondbacks, set the record with 63 RBIs in 62 games, while it took Huisman just 46 games to record 64. Huisman also broke Dellucci's single-season home run record of 17, also set in 1995, with two home runs against Southern Miss on April 15 in Oxford. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.) 19 TO GO: Jason Huisman picked up four hits this weekend against Alabama to move within 19 hits of catching Kevin Kessinger (1989-92) as the Rebels' all-time hit leader with 262. Huisman, however, will have to go on a late tear to catch Kessinger as the Rebels have just seven scheduled games remaining - should Ole Miss fail to qualify for the SEC Tournament, May 13-17 in Birmingham, Ala. Coming into tonight's game with Memphis, Huisman ranks third on the all-time hit list with 243, four behind David Dellucci in second-place with 247. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.)

HENDERSON RECORDS CAREER HOME RUN NO. 25: Junior Brad Henderson recorded his 25th career home run with a three-run home run in Saturday's win over Alabama. The 25 home runs puts Henderson seventh on the Ole Miss career list. The home run was also the 11th of the year for Henderson and snapped a drought of 43-straight at-bats with out a home run. His last home run before Saturday came back on April 8 at Southern Mississippi. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.)

HUISMAN STILL LOOKING FOR DOUBLES RECORD AND ON PACE FOR SLUGGING PCT. MARK: Senior Jason Huisman still stands two doubles shy of tying Chris Snopek's 1992 school single-season doubles record of 21. Huisman hasn't 19 on the year and has doubled since April 14 against Southern Miss. However, Huisman is still on pace to break the school single-season record for slugging percentage set in 1983 by Ken Houser. Huisman carries a .775 slugging percentage into tonight's game, eight points higher than Houser's .767. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.)

REBELS BREAK TEAM-RECORD FOR TOTAL BASES, CLOSING IN ON RBI MARK: Ole Miss broke its second team single-season record of the year this past weekend. The Rebels recorded 51 total bases in the three-game series with Alabama, giving Ole Miss 891 total bases on the year and breaking the school single-season record 871 set back in 1991. The Rebels are also zeroing in on the team single-season RBI mark of 367 set back in 1995. Ole Miss currently has 354 RBIs through 47 games. The Rebels broke the school home run record of 66 set in 1977 on April 15 in Oxford against Southern Miss and has tallied 82 home runs this season. (please see the updated Ole Miss record book on the back page.)

HOME RUN DERBY: Sophomore Michael Rosamond's two home runs against Memphis last Tuesday gave the Rebels four players with 10 or more home runs on the year for the first time in school history. He joins Jason Huisman (18), Bobby Kielty (13), and Brad Henderson (11) with 10 or more home runs on the year. It's also just the second time in school history and the first time since 1977, that Ole Miss has had at least three players hit 10 or more home runs in the same season. The last set teammates to do so was the trio of Mark Barnthouse (1974-77), Mike Pomeranz (1976-79) and Mike Templeton (1975-79). Barnthouse led the 1977 team with 12 and Pomeranz and Templeton hit 11 each. Barnthouse's 12 home runs led the SEC that year and Templeton and Pomeranz tied for second in the league.

REBELS POST HIGHEST WIN TOTAL SINCE 1995: Ole Miss recorded its 25th win of the season Saturday, its highest win total since going 40-22 back in 1995. The Rebels' nine SEC wins is also their best output since going 14-12 in 1995. Ole Miss finished 24-30 and 7-23 in the SEC in 1996 and 22-31 and 6-24 in the conference last season.

NOTES: Freshman catcher Carl Lafferty and senior outfielder Nakia Magee both recorded their ffirst career home runs last Tuesday at Memphis. Lafferty his two that game, the first a grand slam to give the Rebels a 5-1 lead in the second and then followed with a two-run shot in the third to make it 9-1. Magee also hit a grand slam, in the seventh, to increase the Rebels' bulge to 20-4 and round-out the scoring ... Sophomore right-hander Jeff McAvoy fanned a career-high eight against Memphis back on Feb. 28 at the Service Academies Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn. ... Memphis junior right-hander Craig House struck out 11 Rebels and tossed a two-hitter in the Tigers' 4-1 win back on Feb. 28.
