Rhode Island Downs Lady Rebels in Ole Miss Volleyball Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. - Angela McHenry had 13 kills and 17 digs and captured All- Tournament honors to lead the Rhode Island Rams past the Ole Miss Lady Rebels 15-7, 17-15, 10-15, 15-4 in the championship match of the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday. Rhode Island improved to 3-0 on the year, while the Lady Rebels dropped to 2-2 overall.

For Ole Miss, junior Kari Elggren notched 17 kills and nine digs and was named to the All-Tournament team along with freshman Jaime Burns, who had eight kills and 11 digs. Lauren Dorcheus added nine kills and nine digs and hit at a .500 percentage for the Lady Rebels.

Cheri Melson had eight kills and 13 digs and garnered All-Tournament honors for the Rams. Nicolle Becker had 12 kills and a .323 hitting percentage, while Yolanda Bogacz had eight kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Rhode Island served 14 aces against the Lady Rebels.

In the earlier match Saturday, Jacksonville State (1-3) rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the second game to defeat Florida A&M (0-4) 15-5, 15-13, 15-10. The Lady Gamecocks were led by Amy Reaves with 13 kills and seven digs, while Reneeka Gause led the Rattlerettes with nine kills.

Ole Miss won both of its matches Friday as the Lady Rebels downed Jacksonville State 15-4, 9-15, 15-4, 15-1 in their first match and defeated Florida A&M 15-7, 12-15, 15-2, 15-6 in their second match.

Burns led Ole Miss in the win over Florida A&M with 13 kills and a .360 hitting percentage, while Elggren totaled 10 kills. The Lady Rebels served up 11 aces in the match. Elggren led Ole Miss over Jacksonville State with 12 kills, followed by Burns with 11 kills and a .529 hitting percentage.

In other tournament action Friday, Rhode Island topped Florida A&M 15-5, 15-7, 15-11 and Jacksonville State 15-6, 16-14, 15-13.

Ole Miss will return to action Sept. 11-12 at the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas.
