TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama's Kim Rohret batted 2-for-3 with a home run and Christy Kyle went 3-for-6, including a grand slam in game two, to lead the Crimson Tide to a Southeastern Conference softball doubleheader sweep over the Ole Miss Rebels by scores of 6-0 and 9-1.
With the two wins, Alabama improved its overall record to 34-12 and 12-2 in the SEC. Ole Miss fell to 18-32 overall and 2-14 in the league.
"Alabama showed why they are a great team today," said Ole Miss head coach Joyce Maudie. "They are very explosive at the plate, and we did not hit well. For the most part, our pitching staff did a good job, but against Alabama, we needed to score some runs, and we didn't."
In the first game, the Crimson Tide jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Freshman Kelly Kretschman, who had her 33-game hitting streak broken on Saturday by the Rebels, led off the first with a single and later scored on a Kyle single to give Alabama a 1-0 lead. Rohret would also score in the inning to increase the Crimson Tide advantage to 2-0. From that point, Christy Cavacco (7-1) took over for Alabama, allowing Ole Miss only five hits while striking out two. The Crimson Tide would score two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings for the 6-0 final. Rohret blasted her fifth homer of the season in the fifth.
Amanda Fine (7-12) took the loss for Ole Miss.
The second game saw the Alabama offense explode for nine runs in the second inning en route to a 9-1 mercy-rule shortened victory. In the second inning, the Crimson Tide built a 5-0 lead before Kyle hit a grand slam to increase the Alabama advantage to 9-0. The Crimson Tide also put together six other hits and took advantage of three Rebel errors in the nine-run second inning. Ole Miss was able to score only one run in the top of the fifth when Kara Chapman was plated on Fine's single.
Penny Cope (17-8) went the distance for Alabama, allowing only one run on five hits. She struck out three. Kari Ceriani (3-8) suffered the loss for Ole Miss.
