Softball Splits Doubleheader with Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ole Miss sophomore Mandy Shklar went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and sophomore Heather Swinney was 1-for-2 with two RBI to lead the Rebel fastpitch softball squad to a 7-2 win over Samford in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Samford took game two by a score of 2-1. With the split, Ole Miss' record now stands at 21-35 overall. The Bulldogs are 13-34.

In game one, the Rebels held a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning, but exploded for four runs in that inning to put the game out of reach at 5-0. Ole Miss would add another run in the top of the fifth for a 6-0 advantage, before the Bulldogs scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Rebels scored one run in the seventh for the final 7-2 margin of victory.

Sophomore Amanda Fine (9-13) picked up her ninth win of the season, as she gave up only three hits while striking out two in six innings of work. Sophomore Bobbi Wurth pitched the seventh inning to close out the Rebel win. Samford's Brianne Mertens (6-19) suffered the loss.

The Bulldogs took game two by a 2-1 score in come-from-behind fashion. Ole Miss scored its one run in the top of the fourth when Jamie Cummings crossed the plate to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. Samford, however, fought back to take the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Mindy Shunnarah and Kristie Dunaway both scored. The Bulldog defense then held Ole Miss scoreless in the final two innings for the win.

Ole Miss' Brittany Maxey (5-9) suffered the loss, while Michelle Ashley (7-14) of Samford took the victory. Ashley went the distance, giving up only one run on five hits.

The Rebels return to action on Saturday, April 18 when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to meet the Tigers in a Southeastern Conference doubleheader. The action begins at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
