Softball Splits in First Round of Pepsi Classic

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Ole Miss Rebels opened their 1999 softball season by splitting its first two games in the first round of the Texas-Arlington Pepsi Classic here Friday afternoon.

The Rebels fell to the 11th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 13-3 in the first game, but bounced back to defeat Stephen F. Austin 8-6 in the second game.

"We responded well after losing the first game," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "We found a way to win and the players are starting to believe in the things we are doing."

Kaci Coffee, Mandy Shklar and Heather Swinney highlighted the Rebels' day as each hit their first home runs of the season. Coffee and Swinney hit solo shots against the Sooners, while Shklar cranked a three-run homer off Catherine Piaz of Stephen F. Austin.

Senior Kari Ceriana picked up the victory against Stephen F. Austin, going five innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Amanda Fine was tagged with the opening game loss to Oklahoma.

The Rebels will face Northeast Louisiana on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. Championship and consolation round action begins after Saturday's third round games.
