Track Teams Prepare for SEC Quad Meet

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams return to action on Saturday, Mar. 20 when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the SEC Quad Meet. The meet, which will be Ole Miss' second competition of the outdoor season, will also include host LSU, Mississippi State and Arkansas.

Last Saturday, the Rebels and Lady Rebels hosted the Mississippi Open and won all three dual meets, but inclement weather forced sub-par marks in the events which were run while other events were canceled. Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker now looks to this Saturday's meet at LSU as the real beginning of the 1999 outdoor season.

"The teams are really looking forward to this Saturday's meet," said Walker. "Since we did not run a full meet last Saturday as a result of bad weather, this quad meet at LSU will give us our first indication on where we stand, as a team, for the outdoor season.

"Our goal for both teams is to set good marks at the beginning of the season, and improve on them each and every meet there after, so that we are peaking at the SEC and NCAA Championships in May and June. We will use Saturday's meet as a starting point for our outdoor season and look to make improvements from there."

Despite the rain-shortened Mississippi Open, the Rebels and Lady Rebels dominated the meet, as both teams defeated Louisville, Arkansas-Little Rock and Mississippi Valley State. Sophomore Savante Stringfellow paced the men's squad at last Saturday's Mississippi Open. Stringfellow placed first in both the long (22-11.75) and triple (40-2) jumps. The Rebels also took first place in four other events, with Kyle Wallace in the 100 meters (11.55), Aaron Fenzel in the 400 meters (49.43), Tyler Simon in the 800 meters (2:00.21) and Larry Henderson in the 1500 meters (3:58.48).

On the women's side, Tiffany Smith led the Lady Rebel effort with two top-two finishes at the Mississippi Open. Smith won the 100 meters (13.06) and was second in the 800 meters (2:20.33). Other first-place finishers for the Lady Rebels were Candice Cattron in the 400 meters (57.75), Chika Chuku in the 800 meters (2:18.67), Lauren Beaulieu in the 1500 meters (5:04.83) and Brandy Barnett in the long jump (14-5.25).

Ole Miss entered its 1999 outdoor campaign after a successful indoor season, where a school-record five athletes - including the Rebel 4x400 meter relay team - competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Tisha Parker placed seventh in the long jump on the women's side, while the Rebel 4x400 meter relay team of Wayne Woolery, Savante Stringfellow, Jimmy Love and Alonzo Banks finished fourth. All five athletes received All-America accolades.
