OXFORD, Miss. -- Several members of the Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to participate in the 104th annual Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday, Apr. 23-25. The remainder of both squads will travel to Monroe, La., to compete in the Northeast Louisiana Invitational on Saturday.

"The Penn Relays will be an incredible experience for our athletes who are competing," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "It is one of the top track and field meets in the world, and it attracts many of the best amatuer and professional athletes from the United States and many other nations. Our kids will be competing against the best, and hopefully they will use that as motivation to perform at their upmost potential.

"The rest of our athletes will compete at the Northeast Louisiana meet on Saturday. With the SEC Championships only four weeks away, it is important that we continue to build momentum toward that meet in late May."

At the Penn Relays, Marcus Jones (high jump), Bernie Kuria (10,000 meters) and Wayne Woolery (400-meter hurdles) will represent the men's squad in their respective events. The Ole Miss men's 1600-meter relay team will also compete at the Penn Relays. On the women's side, Tisha Parker and Latoria Jordan will participate in the long and triple jumps, while Brandy Mack will run in the 400-meter hurdles. The Lady Rebel sprint medley relay team will also compete at the relays.

Last Saturday, the Rebels and Lady Rebels competed in the Mississippi State Invitational despite the inclimate weather. The Rebels won the men's team title, defeating Mississippi State, McNeese State, Western Kentucky and Southern Mississippi. The women's squad placed second in the five-team field, finishing behind only Mississippi State.

Freshman Tristan McCord led the men's effort at last Saturday's meet with two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters. The Rebels also took top honors in six other events at the Mississippi State Invitational, including junior Bernie Kuria who improved his time (14:32.01) in the 5000 meters for the third straight meet. For the Lady Rebels, Parker was a double winner as she took first place in both the long (20-1 1/4) and triple (38-0 1/4) jumps. Mack was Ole Miss' other first-place finisher, winning the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.03.

Following this weekend's action, the Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Tiger-Rebel Invitational in Memphis on May 2. The SEC Championships will be held at the University of Florida May 21-24
