OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 5 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team needed only about two hours to down Maryland 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Regional at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, Saturday.

With the win, the Lady Rebels improve to 22-4 overall and notch the single season record for wins. The previous best was 21 in the 1996 campaign. The Lady Rebels have now won nine in a row and 13 of their last 14.

"This was a tough match and it was exactly what we needed today," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "Maryland is a good team and played very well. Courtenay (Chapman) made two great comebacks in her match."

Ivona Mihailova got things going early with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lorraine Bittles at No. 2 singles. She improves to 23-3 in dual matches and has won nine in a row. Agnes Muzamel dominated Megan Griffin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to make it 2-0.

Alesya Ignatieva cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Adrienne Pavelko at No. 6 singles to give the Lady Rebels a 3-0 lead. Mariana Eberle finished off Courtney Perkins 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to increase the Lady Rebel lead to 4-0.

That left Courtenay Chapman and Celeste Frey remaining on court with Ole Miss needing one point to clinch the win. Chapman was down 5-1 in the first set and came back to win the set 7-5 and then was down 3-1 in the second and won the next five games to seal the victory for the Lady Rebels. Chapman has now won six in a row and seven of her last eight matches.

"We knew coming in that Ole Miss was a very tough team," Maryland head coach Jim Laitta said. "They are strong from top to bottom and are very deserving of their top five ranking. They have a chance to win it all. Ole Miss has a very classy team."

Ole Miss will meet the winner of the North Carolina/Washington match in the championship Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
