Women's Softball Splits Two Games in Fall Classic

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior righthander Amanda Fine threw a two-hit shutout to lead the Rebel softball team to a 4-0 victory over Mississippi University for Women in first-day action at the Ole Miss Softball Fall Classic on Saturday.

Nicholls State won two games on Saturday, defeating MUW, 4-1 and Ole Miss, 2-1. The final contest of the day had Ole Miss playing Nicholls State at 8:00 p.m.

In the first game, the Rebels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Stephanie Vaglica and Kaci Coffee both scored. Ole Miss would add one run in both the fourth and fifth innings for the final 4-0 margin of victory. Coffee led Ole Miss at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Michele Haynie and Sondra Mott collected the only two hits for MUW in the game.

Nicholls State defeated MUW in game two by a 4-1 score. Nicholls State scored three runs in the first two innings and never looked back. Melissa Johnson scored MUW's only run of the game in the fourth inning. Angie Walker led the Nicholls State offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the third game, Nicholls State scored two runs on two Rebel errors in the top of seventh inning for the 2-1 win. Ole Miss scored its run in the bottom of the first inning when Mandy Shklar crossed the plate on an error by the Nicholls State right fielder. Lisa Guillory picked up the win for Nicholls State, while Brittany Maxey suffered the loss for the Rebels.

The Ole Miss Softball Fall Classic continues on Sept. 27 with three games. The action begins at 12:00 p.m. with Ole Miss versus Nicholls State followed by MUW and Nicholls State at 2:00 p.m. and Ole Miss and MUW at 4:00 p.m.
