Women's Tennis Falls to Wake Forest

MADISON, Wisc. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team and ninth-ranked Wake Forest battled to a 3-3 tie after the singles, but the Deamon Deacons took two of three doubles matches to edge the Lady Rebels 5-4 at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Saturday. Ole Miss goes to 6-2 on the year, while Wake Forest is now 2-3.
With the score tied 3-3 heading into doubles, Ole Miss won at the No. 1 position as Celeste Frey and Mariana Eberle dominated Janet Bergman and Mariel Verban 8-1. Wake Forest answered with a 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. That left three-time All-Americans Agnes Muzamel and Courtenay Chapman on the court at No. 2 doubles against the Deamon Deacons' Maren Haus and Carolina Ullring. Wake Forest won 9-7 to clinch the victory.
In singles, Muzamel lost for the second time this year to Verban 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot. Frey defeated Jackie Houston 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Ivona Mihailova beat Haus 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead. The Deamon Deacons' Ullring beat Alesya Igntieva 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, but then Eberle defeated Annemarie Milton 6-3, 6-1 at the fifth spot to give the Lady Rebels a 3-2 lead. At No. 4 singles, Chapman won the first set against Bergman, but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-4 to even things up going into doubles play.
The Lady Rebels finished 1-2 at the National Team Indoor, defeating Kansas 5-4 in the first round and then losing to No. 3 Georgia in the quarterfinals, 5-2. The Lady Rebels return to action Feb. 27 as they kick off the SEC season with Kentucky at noon.
