OXFORD, Miss. -- Amanda Fine, a pitcher and infielder for the Ole Miss fastpitch softball team, was named the recipient of this year's Outstanding Computer Science Sophomore Award at the University of Mississippi.

Fine, an All-Southeastern Conference second team selection a year ago, will receive the award at the Honors Convocation, which will be held at Fulton Chapel April 2. She will also have her name published in the 1998 Honors Program.

A Computer Science major, Fine was selected for the award for having a combination of the highest overall grade-point average and highest GPA among all sophomore majors in her academic department. Fine carries a 3.46 overall GPA.

"We are so proud of Amanda for being chosen as this year's Oustanding Computer Science Sophomore Award," Ole Miss head coach Joyce Maudie said. "Amanda has worked hard to succeed both academically and athletically. This is a tremendous accomplishment for a very deserving student-athlete."

On the field, Fine leads the team with a .338 batting average and a 1.50 earned-run average. She is also among the SEC leaders in batting average, ERA, pitching wins, and strikeouts. Since missing 12 games after suffering a separated shoulder on Feb. 20, Fine has gone 5-1 in her last six starts while giving up only one earned run.
