FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Celeste Frey of the Ole Miss women's tennis team upset top-seeded Stephanie Nickitas of Florida in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the SEC Fall Coaches Championships, Saturday, to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday. She also teamed with Mariana Eberle to reach the Semifinals in the doubles.
Nickitas came into the tournament ranked No. 13 in the nation, but Frey, a transfer from Florida International, has been playing well. She brought a 6-2 record into the SEC Fall Coaches Championships and has won all three of her matches so far in straight sets. Frey will face Georgia's Christa Grey in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m., Sunday.
In the Flight "B" singles, freshman Aleysa Ignatieva advanced to the finals with a straight set win over Mississippi State's Elmear Sloan, 6-3, 6-1. Iganatieva had a bye in the first round and has only lost a total of seven games in two matches. She will meet Kate Burson of Vanderbilt in Sunday's final at 10:00 a.m.
Frey and Eberle defeated Tami Botts and Ana Paula Mores 8-5 in the third round of doubles and then dominated Arkansas's team of Andrea Ho and Tara Reid 8-1 in the quarterfinals. The two have become quite a duo since teaming up together for the first time at the National Clay Court Championships, where they reached the finals. Currently 8-1 on the year, Frey and Eberle will face the team of Aarthi Venkatesan and Zoe Mellis of Georgia in the semifinals at 3:00 p.m., Sunday.
