Cubs Sign Chad Mead to Free Agent Contract

OXFORD, Miss. - The Chicago Cubs have signed Ole Miss outfielder Chad Mead to a free agent contract.
Mead, a senior on this past spring's team that advanced to the NCAA College Station Regional, will report to the Cubs' Rookie League team in Mesa of the Arizona League. The league begins play June 23.
Mead transferred to Ole Miss prior to the 1998 season after two years at the University of Oklahoma. A native of Woodward, Okla., Mead hit .283 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 1998. This past spring, Mead hit .243 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 52 games.
