Four Lady Rebel Tennis Players Advance at Regional Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Top-seeded Agnes Muzamel of the Ole Miss women's tennis team cruised to the third round of the ITA South Region Championships Friday, winning both matches in straight sets to lead the Lady Rebel contingent.

Muzamel, the defending champion, defeated Uta Dittmer of Georgia State 7-6(1), 6-1 in the first round and then downed Vanda Novakova of South Alabama 6-0, 6-3 in the second round. She will face Mary-Carlisle White of Florida in the round of 16.

Second-seeded Celeste Frey had little trouble getting to the third round with an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Marta Kostrohounova of Bethune Cookman and a 6-3-, 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech's Bobbie Guthrie. She will meet Mississippi State's Ivana Belancic in the third round.

Ivona Mihailova, seeded fifth in the tournament, dominated Tracy Campbell of Mercer 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and then defeated Nanette Duxin of Florida State 6-3, 6-4 in the second round setting up a third-round meeting with Florida's Whitney Laiho.

Jackson native Courtenay Chapman also got to the third round with two easy wins. In the first round Chapman downed Maria Montoya of Florida International 6-3, 6-1 and then in the second round she dominated Simon Jardin of Auburn 6-2, 6-1. Chapman will meet 13th-ranked Stephanie Nickitas of Florida in the third round.

Three of Ole Miss' doubles teams won to advance to the second round. Defending champions, Muzamel and Chapman, allowed the team of Breslin and Glinzler from Alabama only one game in a 8-1 win. Frey and Mariana Eberle downed Montoya and Guzman of Florida International 8-2 and the Mihailova twins beat Novakova and Kotesocova of South Alabama 8-5.

The tournament continues Saturday with the round of 16 singles, and two rounds of doubles.
