LOS ANGELES - Agnes Muzamel and Ivona Mihailova of the Ole Miss women's tennis team won their first round matches at the Riviera All-American Championships Thursday to advance to the second round at the Riviera Country Club.
Muzamel downed eighth-seeded Annica Cooper of UCLA 6-4, 6-0 to move into the second round, where she will face Teryn Ashley of Stanford. Muzamel reached the quarterfinals at last year's tournament and the finals two years ago.
Mihailova defeated Francesca La'O of California 6-4, 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting with seventh-seeded Martina Nedelkova of Virginia Commonwealth. Ole Miss is one of only two schools to have two players left in the draw after the first round. Stanford is the other school.
Celeste Frey was a lucky loser into the main draw but lost her first round match to Kristina Kraszewski of Washington 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
