Lady Rebel Netters Fall in Doubles Final

6/21/1999 | Women's Tennis

September 28, 1998

BALTIMORE, Md. - Mariana Eberle and Celeste Frey of the Ole Miss women's tennis team lost to the top-seeded team of Marissa Catlin and Vanessa Castellano of Georgia 6-0, 6-2 in the doubles final at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships Sunday. Earlier in the morning, Frey defeated Georgia's Esther Knox to capture the consolation singles.

This was the first tournament Eberle and Frey had competed in together as Frey transferred from Florida International. It was also the first time in Ole Miss women's tennis history that a team has qualified for the doubles final. Former All-American Marie-Laure Bougnol made the singles final two consecutive years in 1993 and 94, and won the title in 93. Agne Muzamel reached the finals in singles last year.

In the singles consolation final, Frey downed Knox 6-1, 6-4. Frey started out in the qualifying round of the clay courts, but was a lucky loser into the main draw. She lost to Vanderbilt's No. 1 player Julie Ditty, in the first round of the main draw, but rebounded to win
