Lady Rebel Netters Fall to Vanderbilt

OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 7 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team came into Friday's match with 17th-ranked Vanderbilt riding a five-match winning streak, but the Commodores put a halt to the streak, downing the Lady Rebels 8-1 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
Vanderbilt jumped on the Lady Rebels early and never looked back winning five of the six singles. Kristy Blumberg downed Martina Crha 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles for the first point of the match. Crha had won seven of her last eight coming into the match.
The Commodore's Kristen Radford handed Courtenay Chapman a 7-5, 6-2 defeat at the third spot to put Vanderbilt up 2-0. Ole Miss' Mariana Eberle cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Staci Ryan at No. 5 singles, but that was all the Lady Rebels would manage the rest of the day.
Callie Creighton upset 20th-ranked Ivona Mihailova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Annie Plessinger defeated Missy Brewer 6-3, 7-6(5) at No. 6 singles to make it 4-1 with Lady Rebel Agnes Muzamel in a tight battle with Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty at the top spot.
The two split sets with seventh-ranked Muzamel taking the first 6-3 and Ditty winning a tiebreaker (7-6 (2)) in the second. Ditty broke Muzamel early on in the third and went on to win 6-3, clinching the victory for the Commodores.
The Lady Rebels return to action Sunday, when they will host 11th-ranked William & Mary at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The match begins at 10:00 a.m.
