OXFORD, Miss. - Several members of the Ole Miss women's tennis team will be competing in the ITA South Region Championships, which begin Friday in Athens, Ga. The tournament concludes Monday with the finals.
Players from 25 teams will be competing including defending national champion Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Mississippi State. The tournament will feature a 64-player singles and a 32-team doubles draw with the winners advancing to the ITA National Indoor championships in February in Dallas, Texas.
"We have had some very good results this fall and are looking forward to this tournament and the opportunity it provides for our players to end the fall season on a positive note," head coach Jerry Montgomery said.
Ole Miss will be looking to repeat as Agnes Muzamel captured the singles title last year, and teamed with Courtenay Chapman to win the doubles crown here in Oxford. Muzamel cruised through the tournament to the finals where she rallied to defeat former NCAA Champion Dawn Buth of Florida. Muzamel and Chapman defeated Buth and Bonnie Bleecker in the doubles final.
Celeste Frey leads the Lady Rebels this fall with a 15-6 record. She has defeated seven nationally-ranked players. Muzamel, ranked ninth in the nation, has reached the semifinals of the National Clay Court Championships and the quarterfinals of the All-American Championships.
This is the final fall event of the 1998-99 season for the Lady Rebels.
