6/21/1999 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's volleyball will conclude its six-week spring season Saturday as the Lady Rebels host a five-team, round-robin tournament Saturday at the Women's Multi-Sport Complex.
The Lady Rebels will host Memphis, Alabama-Birmingham, Mississippi State and Arkansas State in four shortened matches Saturday. Each match will consist of two, 30-point, rally scoring games that are aimed to give teams a chance to play in competitive situations as they make final preparations before the fall season.
"We have a steady stream of quality opponents in this tournament which will help us to better measure and assess our progress as a team," Ole Miss assistant coach T. J. Meagher said. "All of the teams which will be here are very good teams and each of them will present a viable challenge to our team. Our main goal is to have our best performance of the spring after six weeks of hard work."
The Lady Rebels will face Memphis at 10 a.m., followed by a 11 a.m. meeting with Alabama-Birmingham. Ole Miss will conclude the tournament with a 2 p.m. contest with Mississippi State and a 3 p.m. matchup against Arkansas State.
Ole Miss, which is coming off a 12-19 season that saw them tie a school record with seven SEC victories, returns four starters led by sophomore setter Lisa Franinno. Franinno, who is in fourth-place on the Lady Rebel career assist list, finished in seventh place in the SEC a year ago with 11.13 assists per game and ninth in aces per game (.40).
The Lady Rebels also return junior defensive specialist Danielle Atzinger, who posted 173 digs and nine service aces a year ago while playing in all 31 matches. Ole Miss is also solid in the middle with starters Lauren Dorcheus and Anna Hackbarth returning. Dorcheus, a sophomore, finished eighth in the SEC in blocking, averaging 1.15 per game while posting a career-best 139 kills. Hackbarth came on at the end of her freshman campaign and recorded 64 kills and 40 total blocks.
Ole Miss will be coached once again by John Blair, who will be entering his 13th-straight season at the helm of the Lady Rebels. Blair now holds in the longest continuous coaching tenure in the SEC.
