Lady Rebels Take Two at S.W. Missouri State Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Ole Miss softball team downed Iowa State 7-3 and Southwest Missouri State 4-1 in the Southwest Missouri State Classic on Sunday to improve to 8-3 on the year.
In the first game, the Rebels' Amanda Fine gave up 10 hits, three runs and struck out seven batters as she improved to 4-2 on the year. The Rebels tied a team single-game record with five stolen bases against Iowa State. Ole Miss was led by Kaci Coffee, who went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, and by Heather Swinney, who went 1-for-4 with 4 RBI.
Iowa State got on the board in the top of the second inning, but Ole Miss responded with three runs in the bottom of the third as Swinney reached on a fielding error, scoring Coffee, Stephanie Vaglica and Mandy Shklar.
The Rebels added two runs in the fourth inning on a single by Coffee and two more in the sixth on Coffee's double and Swinney's single to take a 7-1 lead. Iowa State added two runs in the top of the seventh, but that was as close as the Cyclones would get.
Lisa Frank led Iowa State at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, while Laura Browning went 2-for-3 and Alexis Quijano went 2-for-2. Mandy Loushin (1-1) gave up 10 hits and seven runs and struck out five for Iowa State as the Cyclones fell to 4-6 on the year.
In the second game, Jennifer Hughes struck out a career-high eight batters and held Southwest Missouri State to one run on five hits to improve to 2-0 on the year. For Ole Miss, Korrie Kashuba and Paige Cochrane both went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI. Swinney was 2-for-3, while Vaglica was 2-for-2.
Ole Miss put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Cochrane singled and advanced to second on a fielding error, scoring Jessica Hamilton and Swinney. Southwest Missouri State answered with a run in the third on a triple by Sarah Madden that scored Erica Shepard. In the fourth inning, Kashuba tripled to score Hamilton and Swinney for the final margin of victory.
Madden went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead SW Missouri State. Jessica Davis (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out two as SW Missouri State fell to 6-4 on the season.
Ole Miss returns to action at the South Florida Speedline Tournament in Tampa, Fla., March 4-7. The Rebels take on New Mexico State, South Florida, Ball State and Oklahoma State in the tournament.
