NEW YORK - The Houston Astros made Ole Miss junior outfielder Michael Rosamond their top pick in the 1999 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, selecting the Rebel outfielder in the sandwich round between the first and second rounds with the No. 42 pick overall.
Sandwich picks are allotted to teams between the first and second rounds and second and third rounds for losing a player to free agency. The Astros selected Rosamond with their sandwich pick in compensation for losing All-Star left-hander Randy Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"This is just a blessing," Rosamond said from his Madison, Miss. home. "It's been my goal for a long time to play professional ball and now my dreams are coming true. This has been a lot of fun."
Rosamond was originally a 41st-round selection by Houston out of high school in the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. He instead opted to attend Ole Miss where he was a three-year starter in the outfield.
Rosamond finishes his three-year career at Ole Miss with a .292 career batting average with 36 home runs and 105 RBI. His 36 home runs ranks third on the Rebel career list.
He earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors this season, hitting .310 with 18 home runs and 41 RBI in helping the Rebels to their first postseason appearance since 1995. Rosamond led the Rebels at this past weekend's College Station Regional, going 8-for-14 with a home run in three games.
The 50-round draft is being held via conference call Wednesday through Friday in New York.
