Mississippi Player of the Year Signs with Rebel Netters

OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi standout Jim Jacobs of Jackson, has a signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss men's tennis team beginning in the 1999-2000 year, Rebel head coach Billy Chadwick announced Thursday.
Jacobs, who hails from Jackson Academy, has been ranked No. 1 in boys 18 singles in Mississippi the last two years. The Mississippi Player-of-the-Year, Jacobs was the high school doubles champion in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades and the singles champion his sophomore, junior and senior years.
"Our goal is to sign the top player in the state of Mississippi each year and beginning with Dave Randall, these players have been instrumental in this program becoming nationally recognized," Chadwick said. "We expect Jim to be an outstanding addition to our program."
In addition to his high school accomplishments, Jacobs won three rounds at the ITF Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La., last fall and at the USTA 18-under National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. Jacobs also finished in the top 24 at the USTA National Junior Indoor Championships.
Jacobs, who joins fellow Mississippians David Blackburn and Bo Petro, is a past recipient of the Mississippi Tennis Association Sportsmanship Award. He has also been named Outstanding Junior Tennis Player.
The Rebels are the No. 6 seed in the upcoming NCAA Championships and will host first and second round matches Friday and Saturday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
