Mississippi State Downs Ole Miss in Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi State downed Ole Miss 15-10, 15-12, 15-12 in Southeastern Conference volleyball action Thursday. Mississippi State improved to 8-19 overall and 4-10 in the SEC, while Ole Miss dropped to 9-21 and 2-12 in the SEC.
Ole Miss was led by Kari Elggren with 14 kills and 12 digs, followed by Anna Hackbarth with 10 kills. Lisa Frannino led the Lady Rebels in digs with 15, and Danielle Atzinger and Leigh Rittiner added six digs each.
Mississippi State was led by Christine Owen with 17 kills and nine digs, followed by Brianne Smedley with 15 kills and Jill Ferguson with 14. Jennifer Shupe and Jenny Head added eight digs each.
Ole Miss led in every game but could not hold the lead in any of the three games. The Lady Rebels began the match with a 4-1 and 6-3 lead, but State came back to tie the match 8-8 and take an 8-9 lead. Frannino's ace tied the contest at 9-9, but State took control and won the first game 15-10.
In the second game, the Lady Rebels jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but once again State roared back to tie the match 4-4. State added five more points before Ole Miss put a point on the board and eventually won the game 15-12.
A service ace by Elggren gave Ole Miss a 1-0 lead in the third, while a Renata Nowacki ace put the Lady Rebels up 5-0. Ole Miss took a 10-3 lead before State scored seven consecutive points and walked away with the game, 15-12, and the match, 3-0.
Ole Miss travels to Mississippi State on Sunday for the final regular-season match for both teams. The match begins at 12:30 p.m. and will be televised by FOX SportSouth.
