Ole Miss to Tip off Basketball Season with Rebel Hoopla

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will tip off the 1998-99 basketball season with the second annual Rebel Hoopla on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Tad Smith Coliseum. Admission to Rebel Hoopla is free. Approximately 3,000 fans attended last year's event.
The festivities will begin with prizes and give-aways from 7:30 until 8:00 p.m. Some of the prizes include two Southeastern Conference Tournament tickets, two Ole Miss basketball season tickets, a road trip with the Rebels, gift certificates and more.
Following the give-aways, the Rebels and Lady Rebels will take the floor. The Lady Rebels will hold an intra-squad scrimmage first, followed by a scrimmage by the Rebel team.
"Our basketball team is excited about Rebel Hoopla taking place," said Lady Rebel head coach Ron Aldy, who is in his second season at the helm of the program. "This time of the year, our players are anxious to start the season. We are hoping to have as good a turnout as last year. The fans were very encouraging, and at this time in our practices, our players need that."
First-year Rebel head coach Rod Barnes said, "We are very excited about Rebel Hoopla. It's always a great opportunity for the fans to get a preview of the upcoming season. We had an outstanding crowd at last year's Rebel Hoopla, and we look forward to an even larger number of fans at this year's event. I hope everyone will come out and show their support for Ole Miss basketball."
Last year, the Rebels posted a 22-7 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss won its second straight SEC Western Division title and received a second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. In 1997-98, the Lady Rebels finished the season with a 12-19 overall record and a 3-11 SEC mark, and became the first-ever No. 12 seed to win a game in the SEC Tournament.
