OLE MISS POSTGAME QUOTES
OLE MISS PLAYERS
JOE GUNN:
"I think I focused real hard on getting myself ready for this game. I came out and tried to run hard and do my part to help the team."
On breaking the freshman rushing record:
"I've been thinking about it a little bit since the third game. I tried to block it out of my mind and just concentrate on what the coaches want me to do. I think that's what I did today because if I would've been thinking about the record, I don't think I would've played as hard as I did."
On having two running backs on the same team:
"It really contributes to the team. When one guy feels like he can't get the job done, the other one can come in and step it up. We can kind of depend on one another. We try to pick each other up and give each other pep talks. I don't mind sharing time. I think it's great."
"The running game is a big part of our offense. It always seems to jump start our offense. We knew we had to come in and run the ball. Our offensive line played really well."
ROMARO MILLER:
"Today was just one of those days for the quarterback. Against Alabama, I looked so good except for that one pass and today, I came out and just couldn't hit a wide receiver. I really don't know what it was. The passes I was throwing were wide open but I just couldn't get it there today. There is really no explanation for it. I was glad to get a day like this out of the way against Arkansas State instead of LSU."
DEUCE MCALLISTER:
On Joe Gunn:
"He runs hard. He's going to be a good back here at Ole Miss. Records were made to be broken. I was glad to be here and see him break the record. I just tell him good luck. Last year I did it in ten games and this year he did it in seven."
On sharing time:
"That's just a part of our team. Joe and I have different styles of running. We just bring so much to the table with our offense as a whole. Whoever's in the groove, if he's hot, leave him in. If he's tired, take him out for a play or two, then let him come back in. That's how our offense really works. This way, nobody really gets tired. It makes the defense have to adjust to whoever's in the game."
McAllister continued:
"This was an ugly win. We didn't play that well as an offense. We were able to score thirty points. We need to come out and practice hard this week. We really didn't practice well last week. We needed a win and I'm glad we got the win. We'll be ready for the next four games."
KEN LUCAS:
"All week the coaches were telling us we needed to step it up in special teams because we were last in the conference. We hadn't had a blocked punt all season so we put faster people on the punt returns to try and get a block and it worked out right."
"The win was ugly but it was very important that we win this one. In the next four games, we will have to play much better. It's tougher to get up for games like this because you have to be focused and play your best ball against teams you don't expect to beat you. The kicking game was pretty good today. Special teams did well. That should really makes the coaches proud."
CARLISLE MCGEE:
"I just tried to keep my head down and concentrate and not worry about how the fans were treating me because the kicking's been bad here. I found out Wednesday that I would be kicking. I was a little nervous but I tried not to worry about if I'd miss it or make it."
"The coaches told me I needed to work on my height to make sure I get my ball high enough. I tried to work on that and I think I did a pretty good job. I had great protection today. There were good snap and holds."
ARKANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Arkansas State Coach Joe Hollis
"We're disappointed that we didn't win the football game, but I don't have anything to complain about as a head coach about our intensity or competing for 60 minutes. Our players did that. The challenging thing is that we need to compete with the same intensity level each week."
"A special teams mistake gave them the second touchdown. I don't know where the breakdown came from, but I do know it was an all-out punt block. Without looking at the film, we didn't handle it very well. Obviously it resulted in a blocked punt."
"The other biggest negative is that in the first half when we were in the red zone, we didn't put points on the board. It always comes back to haunt you, kind of like walks in baseball. When you have an opportunity to score against a good team and you only put three points on the board instead of 14, it should come back to haunt you and it obviously did."
"I thought our plan on offense and defense was good. We played a fine football team and I am pleased with the way our players competed. Ole Miss is a good football team and I wouldn't be surprised if they beat LSU next weekend."
Arkansas State Player Sean Mitchell
"The first thing we tried to do today, was keep Ole Miss out of the endzone. One of our set goals going into every game is to try to keep the other team from scoring on us."
"We mixed our coverages up trying to confuse Romaro Miller. We would blitz one time and then change up on him on the next play."
"The turning point of the game was the blocked punt. It changed the momentum. I have to give Ole Miss credit. They won the ballgame."
Arkansas State Player Robert Kilow
On the death of his sister Monday
"On my flight up there, I was really debating if I really should come out here. I didn't know whether I could help the team or not. Every time a I got a hit the only thing that went through my mind, was that this couldn't be any worse than what my sister went through."
