OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team blanked the University of Tulsa, ranked 36th, 7-0 Saturday at the Women's Sports Complex. With the win, the Rebels improve to 2-0 on the season after downing Memphis 6-1 on Friday.
The Rebels won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Anders Stenman and Martin Selin downed Joel McGregor and Viljar Zilmer 8-3 at No. 2 doubles and then Martin Sjoqvist and Bo Petro defeated Gareth Williams and Nenad Toroman 8-4 to clinch the point.
Ole Miss quickly went up 2-0, after Selin's opponent, McGregor, retired down 5-1 in the first set. James Shortall gave the Rebels a 3-0 lead cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williams, at the top spot and then Sjoqvist sealed the win, dominating Zilmer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Stenman rallied to defeat Toroman, ranked 58th in the nation, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(6). He had five match points at 5-4, but Toroman held on for the game as the two went to a tiebreaker. Newcomer Kristoffer Stahlberg, playing in his first match for the Rebels, defeated Sean Monk 6-4, 6-2. Ben Cousins beat Shri Sudhaker 7-5, 6-4 to give the Rebels a perfect sweep.
The Rebels return to action next Saturday, Feb. 6 as they host Middle Tennessee at 1:00 p.m. in the Women's Sports Complex.
