OXFORD, Miss. -- James Shortall of the Ole Miss men's tennis team will begin competing in the qualifying tournament at the ITA Men's All-American Championships Tuesday in Austin, Texas. He will also team up with Vikrant Chada in the doubles tournament.
Shortall will face Pawel Gajdzik of Baylor in the first round beginning at 8:30 a.m. The qualifying tournament features 64 players who will be vying for 16 open spots in the main draw, which begins on Thursday. Shortall got into the All-American qualifying after an excellent performance at the National Clay Court Championships earlier this year, where he advanced from the prequalifying to the main draw. He is currently 9-2 on the year.
In first-round doubles, Shortall and Chada will meet Brent Horan and Shaun Madden of Texas A&M at 1:00 p.m. Martin Sjoqvist, a finalist at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational this past weekend, and Chada, are already in the main draw singles field.
The toughest hardcourt event of the fall season, the ITA All-American Championships, is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam. The tournament consists of a 64-player singles and 32-team doubles draw. The singles draw features 48 players who have received automatic berths into the main draw and the 16 survivors from the qualifying tournament.
