OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville announced Tuesday that quarterback Jeff Smith of Hattiesburg, Miss., has decided to transfer to Delta State University.

"While we hate to see Jeff leave our program, we wish him well as he continues his football career at Delta State," Tuberville said. Smith enrolled at Ole Miss in 1995 as a true freshman and was redshirted. He did not see any playing time in either 1996 or 1997.

"Jeff was a hard worker during his time with us," Tuberville added. "With only two years left, he just felt he had a better chance to play at Delta State." Smith battled Jake Hill all last spring for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind starter Romaro Miller. He completed five of eight passes for 33 yards in the Red-Blue game.

While playing at Hattiesburg High, Smith earned All-Conference honors when he passed for 1,843 yards and 12 touchdowns.
